1799<S$1> Normal Date. B-21, BB-169, R.3. AU53 NGC. Star 2 repunched; Die flaws below AM. Reiver die state b. Bowers-Borckardt die state V (probably). This is the terminal die state for the variety and the latest seen. An excellent coin for the grade, which is not only in very high grade, but the surfaces are excellent. These features greatly assist the numismatist in studying the advanced die state seen here. Lovely medium silver-gray with ample luster in the fields. Although a common variety, this die state is likely quite scarce.
On the obverse we note die rust below the first star to Liberty's lower curl in the field, additional die rust is seen around the 17 of the date, and in the field between the ninth star and Liberty's nose. Additional die rust resides on the reverse die below STATES within the clouds, and extensive die flaws are found in several areas, including lumps on the star furthest to the right. As to die cracks, the obverse shows several, the primary die crack up through the 99 to Liberty's bust has a branching die crack up through the 7 to Liberty's bust, two more faint die cracks extend parallel, one from the left lower serif of the 1, the other in the field below the curl to the inner point of the first star. A faint die crack has formed below Liberty's bust from right of the date, curls up into the field near the dentils, then turns back down and out the rim below Liberty's bust but continues within the dentils nearly to the last star. A short crack from the rim to Liberty's bust joins the heavier crack through the 99 on Liberty's breast. Die cracks meander through the right stars and TY. This must be the die state referred to by Breen in the Gilhousen Sale lot 1264, but that was a different specimen of this terminal die state.
Ex: Superior's H.
