1799<S$1> Normal Date. B-19, BB-155, R.4. AU58 NGC. Right edge of E over center of highest curl; Die lumps: below N1, E1, above D, over left foot of A2, and at ER. Reiver die state a. Bowers-Borckardt die state IV. A very attractive coin that boasts mint frost in the fields, light silver color with splashes of light toning within the devices, and a great pedigree. This is one of the scarcer die pairings and difficult to obtain in most grades. The present Choice AU coin is certainly high in the Condition Census for the variety and a coin which any specialist would covet. The devices are well struck despite the later die state of the obverse, with advanced die cracks through the first three stars and the date. A short die crack connects the left top of the Y to the rim above on the obverse. On the reverse we note the usual minor die crack right of the D of UNITED, a small connecting bar in the clouds below the E of STATES, and heavily clashed dentils on the right side above OF AMERICA. No significant or distracting surface, rim or device problems, and a premier coin in every way.
Ex: Stack's W. Earl Spies Collection (December, 1974) lot 163. Envelope Included.
