1799<S$1> No Berries. B-12, BB-160, R.2--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. Inner points of star 1 level with center of curls 2 and 3; Defective U, no berries in branch. Reiver die state c. Bowers-Borckardt die state IV. The obverse is a bit too reflective, and similar on the reverse, apparently from a past cleaning. This coin still retains ample eye appeal and has excellent surfaces. As a later die state, there are several obverse die cracks as described in the Reiver and other references. Note the thicker dentils on the left side of the obverse, this area forms a thin cud right along the edge, and is often cataloged as a "rim bump" by people less familiar with this variety. The obverse die is bulging over the last four stars, and the lower third of the obverse also shows bulging from the many die cracks in that area. The obverse of this coin was used for the Reiver plate coin of this variety. On the reverse we note a tiny dig past the second S of STATES which will serve to identify this coin. While not particularly scarce as a variety, this coin would make a welcome addition to an advanced collection.
Ex: K.P. Austin (August, 1967). Envelope Included.
