1799<S$1> MS64 PCGS. B-12a, BB-160, R.3. Die State III. A simply gorgeous coin that boasts strong mint luster and gold and blue peripheral toning on the obverse, the reverse more even with gold toning over the span of the coin. The devices are quite frosty, and show a microscopic texture seen only on this die pairing, notably on Liberty. Fully struck by the dies and a perfect type coin for the collector who demands eye appeal, quality surfaces and a strong strike. There are no adjustment marks to distract the eye, and no surface nicks or bumps that impair the grade. This particular coin is identifiable by a minor planchet edge flaw located above the BE of LIBERTY affecting four or five dentils. This same flaw can be seen on the reverse, below the right long tail feather on the eagle. Considered a "no berry" reverse caused by die lapping, but in reality two tiny berries can be seen, plus one of the upper sticks on the small olive branch on the reverse. Although not the finest known of this variety, certainly in the Condition Census. An excellent choice for the collector who demands a high grade coin that has all the eye appeal of a Gem, without the much higher price. Population: 9 in 64, 5 finer (10/05).
Ex: Heritage's ANA Sale (August, 1995), lot 6520.
From The Jack Lee Collection, III
