1799 S$1 MS63 ANACS.
1799 S$1 MS63 ANACS.<p>B-16b, BB-158. R.2. Die State IV. This sharply defined Mint State Large Eagle Dollar shows medium to dark gray coloration, with slightly lighter rose tinted centers. There are very few abrasions apparent, even when viewed with a glass, and the reverse surfaces are especially nice. This specimen was struck from a clashed and shattered state of the dies. The waves above the date, or "suction marks" as M. H. Bolender liked to call them (actually remnants of the reverse clouds in the obverse die), are visible without a glass. Further study reveals clash marks around Liberty, from stars 2 to 13, and into the field in front of Liberty's chest and neck. Die breaks intersect Liberty's neck area from three different points on the obverse. The reverse is clashed through OF, and a good part of the 1799 date (from the clashing with the obverse die) can be viewed between ES and OF! This is an exciting coin and die state for a student of early Silver Dollars to view. Condition Census: Bowers listed a number of Mint State specimens when his Silver Dollar book was published in 1993. The highest coin listed under "Notable Specimens" was the Amon Carter Specimen called MS63. The next best specimens were called MS60, making this piece a candidate for one of the 5-10 finest examples known. From the Michael Hering Collection.
