1799<S$1> MS61 NGC. B-9, BB-166, R.2. A scarce and significant early die state of Bolender-9, known by specialists as the Apostrophe Variety, named for the die crack from the border just after the final S of STATES into the field. Usually identified by this feature, however, this is Die State II in Dave Bowers' Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, and traces of the reverse crack after S are only visible with magnification, or by those who have perfect eyesight. A faint crack is also present beneath the 1 in the date. Luster glows beneath dusky dark brown color and darker steel toning. A tiny rim nick is visible on the obverse at 5 o'clock, but this only affects a portion of four dentils. This is a spectacular early dollar in full Mint State preservation, and among the finest known of this early die state.
