<B>1799 S$1 Irregular Date, Reverse of 1798 AU53 NGC.</B></I> B-15, BB-152, R.3. Die State II. Reiver Die State b, early. This variety should be given a separate listing in the <I>Guide Book</B></I> as it is the only 1799 dollar with a line star pattern on the reverse. It should be recorded as "1799 Irregular Date, Reverse of 1798." The reverse was also used for the 1798 B-24 and B-25 varieties, and this is the only 1799 silver dollar variety to be coined from a reverse die used in the previous year. This reverse die is sometimes also known as the "Blundered Stars Reverse" with reverse stars 3 and 4 overlapping the clouds.<BR> This example represents Die State II in the Bowers <I>Silver Dollar Encyclopedia.</B></I> The obverse has a fine die crack connecting stars 1 through 4, and also visible between star 1 and the digit 1, although it is nearly invisible in the lower obverse field, perhaps the reason that a previous cataloger could not see it. Careful examination reveals an additional obverse crack joining the centers of stars 5 and 6, actually described by Bowers in a later die state.<BR> Lovely light gray surfaces with considerable luster. Faint traces of gold and violet toning add to the aesthetic appeal of this piece. A few tiny rim blips are noted on each side.
