1799 S$1 Irregular Date, 13 Stars Reverse MS64 NGC.
1799 S$1 Irregular Date, 13 Stars Reverse MS64 NGC. B-15a, BB-152, R.4. There is little question that this is one of the two finest known examples of the B-15 die marriage. Only one piece was recorded as Mint State by Bowers in his Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, and that coin was described as "Choice BU" by Stack's in their session of Auction '85, later certified by PCGS as MS64 and included in the sale of the Cardinal Collection. In fact, only four others were recorded by Bowers in AU grades. The prior pedigree of this example is not known at the moment, but it shouldn't be difficult to locate, due to the pattern of toning. Both sides have a dusting of light gold with speckles of ivory, and deeper blue peripheral toning. The strike is sharp and the luster is full on both sides. This example has been unknown to the modern-day numismatic world until now, although a prior pedigree certainly exists.
The Irregular Date obverse die was used with three distinctively different reverse dies. BB-151 has a arc-pattern arrangement of 13 stars, BB-152 has a line-pattern arrangement of 13 stars, and BB-153 has 15 reverse stars. This line-pattern is also sometimes called the Reverse of 1798, an extremely important type that does not occur anywhere else among 1799 silver dollars. A late die state with extensive obverse cracks, this piece represents Die State IV in the Bowers Encyclopedia with all die cracks visible, including reverse die cracks through or near STATES OF AMERICA that are seen in the Bowers plate but not described in the text.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
