1799 S$1 Irregular Date, 13 Stars B-15, BB-152, R.4--I 1799[S$1] Irregular Date, 13 Stars B-15, BB-1
1799<S$1> Irregular Date, 13 Stars B-15, BB-152, R.4--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. VF Details. Irregular date, first 9 high, leans left; Line star pattern. Reiver die state a. Bowers-Borckardt die state IV early. The reverse die first used to strike 1798 B-24, BB-124. Light silver in color with traces of darker gold along the reverse rim. Moderate hairlines from a judicious cleaning, which should tone over if given a chance. The obverse is well struck and attractive for the grade, while the reverse shows diagnostic weakness primarily from lapping. On the lower portion of the reverse, the end of the branch extends to the dentils from either die wear or a crack, and it appears that the Mint attempted to lap this branch extension off as the surrounding devices are now quite shallow, with the leaves and berries mere shadows of their former selves. A few of the berries are untethered and float playfully above and below the branch as their tiny anchoring branches have been lapped away from the olive sprig. Identifiable by a small nick on the back of the eagle's head directly across from the junction of the star points to the right.
A later die state of the reverse which carried over from the prior usage in 1798 which includes die lumps around ES of STATES, a line between the three stars on the right, a thin die crack through OF, the wing and below AME of AMERICA and a complex lump near the rim below right claw of the eagle. The obverse die is the famous "Irregular Date" with the first 9 leaning well to the left, and this die shows peripheral cracking. This is the only instance where a 1798 reverse die was used to strike coins dated 1799 in the silver dollar series. The obverse die went on to strike coins from the B-4, BB-153 variety where the obverse cracks became much more pronounced and that die was apparently retired after this next variety was struck.
Ex: John Haugh privately (7/19/1998). Envelope Included.
