1799 S$1 AU55 PCGS. B-19, BB-155, R.5. This specimen is struck from the latest known state of the dies, equivalent to Bowers Die State IV. Bowers considered this to be a rare die state in his Silver Dollars of the United States. Bowers listed two Mint State examples of this rare variety in his Silver Dollar book under "Notable Specimens." The first piece listed, the Casterline Specimen MS-63 is the same as the Davis Specimen AU-58. The New Netherlands 53rd Sale Specimen MS-60 is cataloged as having numerous adjustment marks and a few trivial scratches on both sides. The next four specimens listed were called AU-50, one of which grades XF-45 today (Spies Specimen). Other high grade examples are known, but this specimen in AU55 PCGS is very likely in the Condition Census for the variety. Specialists are encouraged to strongly consider this opportunity. This specimen has attractive medium to darker toning, in shades of blue, gold, and gray. From the Albany Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
