The reverse die, in this case without berries, was used for four different die marriages. First, 1799 varieties BB-158 and BB-159 (B-16 and B-23, respectively) were struck, then the reverse die was drastically lapped, removing the berries in the branch, and BB-160 and BB-161 (B-12 and B-11, respectively) were then coined. This example is an impressive coin in an older green-label holder. It has frosty silver luster with a hint of champagne toning. Traces of blue and iridescent highlights add to the eye appeal. The No Berry reverse was one of the earlier listed Guide Book varieties, and has been a perennial favorite for that reason. The present piece was plated (both obverse and reverse) in the 1998 to 2003 editions of the Guide Book.
From The Royal Oak Collection.
