1799$1> AU53 NGC. B-19, BB-155, R.4. Reiver die state a. Bowers-Borckardt Die State IV. Right edge of E over center of highest curl. Die lumps: below N1, E1, above D, over left foot of A2, and at ER. Not only is this coin very scarce, but it is also a rare die state. The Bowers-Borckardt silver dollar Encyclopedia, an indispensable reference especially for collectors of early dollars, rates this die marriage as an R.5, and comments of this Die State IV: "Obverse now with crack from star 2 to hair. Reverse now has crack from rim to right side of D in UNITED. Rare die state. ..." Because of subsequent appearances, we now rate this BB-155 variety as an R.4. This specimen shows both the diagnostic obverse and reverse die cracks boldly: the largest crack extends leftward from the right of the last 9, through the date and the first two stars to star 3, with the segment between stars 2 and 3 quite heavy, where a second crack joins the first. The second crack extends leftward from the lower curl to star 2 before turning right to join the first crack. A third crack, also heavy from the rim to star 3, thins as it merges into the left field. The diagnostic reverse crack from the rim through the right side of D is also bold.
The lightly toned copper-gold surfaces are pleasing and problem-free on this coin, although a small dig in the center of the bust is noted. The devices are well struck, and there is considerable die clashing in the dentilation above OF AMERICA. The Reiver coin in our recent sale was an AU58 example in a similar die state, which we noted was high within the Condition Census for this elusive variety. Although showing a shade more circulation wear, this pleasing example should afford specialists a second choice at an attractive AU specimen.
