1799<S$1> 8x5 Stars. B-23, BB-159, R.3--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. Eight stars left, five right; Defective U, star 13 above scroll, points to left upright of U. Reiver die state b. Bowers-Borckardt die state III. This coin has been cleaned and remains bright and reflective with a trace of gold toning starting to return on the reverse. This is the only obverse die to show the star arrangement of 8 stars on the left and 5 on the right, and as such is highly desired by collectors building Registry or Guide Book collections as well as variety collectors. On this middle die state, we note a crack extending up through the third and fourth stars into the field, curving back to the rim through the seventh star. There is also a faint die crack through stars ten through twelve to the rim, and a crack or series of tiny die lumps down from the rim through BE of LIBERTY into the field above Liberty's head. Another thin die crack extends from the rim up through the second 9 in the date, drapery lines into Liberty's chest. Jules noted "two small cracks form a V from the top right of B to the rim. The section formed by the V is raised, and looks like the start of a cud" however, this appears to be a small planchet lamination as the lamination continues onto the edge of the coin, and this is not a die crack but unique to this particular coin. Both the obverse and reverse show strong clashing, the obverse from the eagle's wings and clouds, the reverse with Liberty's drapery lines seen around OF. Traces of luster on the reverse and a decent coin overall as most of Liberty's curls are fully defined and there are no other significant handling nicks or problems. Faint adjustment marks are seen on the reverse rim and these will serve to identify this coin along with a tiny vertical line on Liberty's cheek just above her jaw line near the center of her face.
No pedigree information was included with this coin. Envelope Included.
