1799 George Washington Westwood Medal as the “Late President of the United States of America" NGC MS-63
“1799” (c. 1800) George Washington Westwood Medal. First Reverse. Struck in Bronze. Plain Edge. Baker-80A. NGC graded Mint State-63 Brown.
41mm. One of the earliest contemporary Washington medals. This gorgeous example of the historic 1799 dated George Washington “Westwood” Eulogistic (formally expressing praise) Medal is Struck in Bronze, conservatively graded having a Gem Semi-Prooflike Uncirculated appearance. It is a fairly rare early George Washington Memorial medal, produced soon after his death. Dies by John Westwood. A well struck and well above-average example of this rarity. An example of the First Reverse die, with no periods located below "68" and after "People" within the reverse side legend. The Obverse displays a Profile bust of Washington; Obverse legend reads: "George Washington, Esqr. Late President of the United States of America"; Reverse with 13 Arrows above an inscription hailing Washington’s: "With Courage / And Fidelity / He Defended The / Rights / Of A Free People / Died Decr. 14, 1799 / Aged / 68" and around: "Made Commander In Chief Of The American Forces The 15 June 1775." A gorgeous problem-free medal with natural smooth hard, semi-prooflike glossy-brown surfaces. In all, a large, impressive, infrequently seen and important addition to any Washingtonia collection. Ex: American Numismatic Rarities, The Old Colony Collection Auction, December 6-7, 2005, Lot 138 (no lot tag).
