1799 Dollar, 8X5 Stars, PCGS XF40
B-23, BB-159. Ex: Highlander, which was a high-ranking PCGS registry set of early dollars. Of the 22 1799 dollar varieties known, BB-159 is the only one which displays the odd configuration of eight stars on the left obverse, with five stars on the right--an apparent layout problem by an inattentive die sinker. All of the other obverse dies show a 7X6 star layout. This variety has been popular since the mid-1800s and, as such, always draws a premium. The 8X5 variant even has its own listing the in the Guide Book. Not only is this variety in great demand, it is also legitimately scarce. Per the Bowers-Borckardt reference, an estimated 39 to 71 examples are extant above the EF45 level, and the March 2009 PCGS Population Report shows 9 examples at the EF40 level, with 23 finer. The record price established for an EF40 8X5 1799 dollar appears to be an uncertified example that sold as part of the Stack's/ANR Classics June 2004 sale. That coin realized $17,250.
