1799 Conquest of Upper Egypt Crocodile Medal. An uncertified example of this popular medal issued to commemorate the conquest of Upper Egypt (the Sudan) by Napoleon's General Desaix. The obverse of the medal features a bust of an Egyptian pharaoh (old catalogs list the figure as the goddess Iris), while the reverse features a crocodile chained to a palm tree. This is similar to an ancient Roman coin struck in France. This is a Paris Mint issue; the catalog number is General 2: 27G. Forrer 2. This is an interesting medal with the Napoleon connection. Current market value is approximately $150-$200.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
