Bust Dollars 1799 Bolender-8. Mint State 62. Very well struck, with the only evident weakness being at the drapery on Miss Liberty's shoulder, and on the reverse, the central stars above the eagle. Surfaces are smooth and appear virtually flawless at a glance, though some trivial, well concealed marks are present beneath the medium gray toning, accounting for our conservative "62" grade assignment. A patch of mottled dark brown toning covers much of the olive branch, with additional sprinkles present within the vertical lines of the shield and in the field at the left. This coin was obviously well cared for, for there are no rim blemishes or hard contact marks, and happily, it is free of adjustment marks. Bolender-8 (BB-165) can be identified on the obverse by recutting of the inner most point of star 10 and Miss Liberty's open mouth. Considerable die rust is evident in the field. Here we have Die State 2, showing a fairly large crack extending from the rim above star 7, through two points of said star and connecting with LIB. On the reverse, there is extra metal atop the upper loop of the second S in STATES and several other interesting die breaks. N in UNITED was first punched in upside-down, then corrected, with remnants of a wayward serif still apparent between NI. It is strictly a Condition Census caliber specimen of this die variety, probably ranking among the top three or four in existence, of perhaps a dozen Mint State examples reported. As a superlative representative of the Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle design, or for the die variety, this coin is one of the best.
Superior Galleries was founded in 1929 and has been a leader in
