1799/8 S$1 15 Stars Reverse XF40 NGC. B-3, BB-141, R.3
1799/8 S$1 15 Stars Reverse XF40 NGC. B-3, BB-141, R.3. Die State IV. Overdate; 15 reverse stars. This is the latest described die state of the variety. Three varieties of the 1799/8 overdate are known, all from a single obverse die that has a small die crack above the upright of R and elsewhere. Although the Bolender study suggests a different sequence, it is believed that this variety with the 15 Stars reverse was struck before the other two varieties. In fact, the overdates were actually made after certain non-overdate varieties. Dark gray-brown toning with lighter gray on the devices. Traces of deeper steel color are evident near the borders on each side. Minor abrasions are consistent with the grade.
This reverse with 15 stars is quite curious. The top row has seven stars with the leftmost and rightmost stars partially covered by enlarged clouds. This is clearly an engraving error and not a leftover die from an earlier year. While some denominations exist with 15 and even 16 stars on the reverse, dating from 1796 and 1797, there are no known Heraldic Eagle dollar varieties with such a star count from those years as only the Small Eagle design was then in use.
Ex: Wayne Herndon (2/2005).
From The William Luebke Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
