1799/8<S$1> Overdate, 13 Stars. B-2, BB-143, R.3. AU58 NGC. Overdate; 13 Stars, leaf point below left upright of I. Reiver die state a. Bowers-Borckardt die state I. This is the Reiver plate coin for the reverse of this variety. A frosty and lustrous coin that shows excellent surfaces and attractive light gold toning. For this variety, this is certainly near or within the Condition Census. A single obverse die was used for the overdates of 1799, that die being paired with three different reverse dies. This particular issue is more elusive than the other two, and is particularly difficult to find so close to mint condition.
The obverse is very sharply struck for this variety with strong definition on Liberty's curls. Examination will note that the obverse die was lapped, with the lowest curls on Liberty shallow and the curl closest to the first star is disconnected from the rest of Liberty's hair. Weak dentils below the date, probably from the die lapping. Bold on the overdate feature, and no attempt was made to efface the undertype 8 below the second 9 in the date. The obverse die shows various die lumps below the ERT of LIBERTY. On the reverse, a thin die crack is seen from the rim to the outer curve of the D in UNITED, with additional small die lumps seen scattered about. A wonderful coin to represent this variety, and with a great pedigree to boot.
Described in the Superior catalog as "About Uncirculated 50 or so, the reverse nicer than the obverse and with a fully lustrous cartwheel effect. Obverse rubbed on forelock and has many small handling marks. Finest we have seen and extremely rare Extra Fine or better."
Ex: Col. E.H.R. Green; K.P.
