1799/8 S$1 13 Stars Reverse AU58 NGC.<p>B-2, BB-143. R.4. The reverse die for this overdate was first mated with another obverse to create the rare 1799 B-19, BB-155 variety. Sometime after the die cracked from the rim to the right side of D in UNITED, it was married to the obverse die which had been used to strike the 1799 B-1, BB-142 and B-3, BB-141 overdates, creating the 1799 B-2, BB-143 marriage. Bowers believed this to be the scarcest of the three overdates of the year. He further stated that this variety is usually seen in lower grades, and that most specimens grade VF or less. The surfaces on this piece exhibit medium gray toning intermixed with gold in the central areas and encircled by darker gold and blue toning at the peripheries. Condition Census: This specimen may be in the Condition Census as listed in Bowers under "Notable Specimens" on page 332. The finest known example may be the Fairfield Specimen, graded MS63 in Bowers. This is the same coin as the Einstein Specimen, thus only one M63 should be noted. Furthermore, this is the same as the specimen offered in the Bowers' The Collections of Philip Flannagan, November 29-December 1, 2001 as lot 4249, now graded MS64 PCGS. The Miles Specimen (MS60) was not plated but was cataloged as having "a minor planchet defect" at the I in AMERICA, and is most certainly the B-1, BB-142 variety. The next specimen listed was lot 1719 from the April, 1974 Stack's Scanlon Collection sale. But this is the 15 Star overdate, and is erroneously listed under B-2, BB-143. Thus, a specimen such as this grading AU58 is likely in the Condition Census for this variety, and possibly one of the finer specimens known. From the Michael Hering Collection.
