1799/8 1C VG10 PCGS. S-188, B-2, R.4. Pleasing two-tone surfaces have reddish-brown color on the devices and deeper greenish-steel in the fields. A few old scratches and abrasions are fully blended with the surrounding surfaces and completely insignificant. The rarest date in the large cent series, the 1799 has long been a famous date in American numismatics.
The obverse die was prepared for use in 1798, but remained unused until after the first of the year when it was overdated and pressed into service for the 1799 cent coinage. The reverse die was used earlier to coin 1798 S-186 before its further use the following year.
