1799 $5 Small Stars Reverse MS63 PCGS. Breen-6434, BD-2, High R.5. This is an important date among early half eagles, and it is considerably underrated. Mint State examples, regardless of variety, are quite rare. This die combination is tied for the second most common of nine varieties known for the date, yet there are only about 35 to 40 examples known. This piece is tied for the finest example of the Small Stars type certified by PCGS, one of eight similar quality examples (3/07), assuming no resubmissions. While the central obverse and reverse are weakly defined as is often the case, the peripheral obverse and reverse details are bold. The obverse has highly lustrous and frosty yellow-gold surfaces while the reverse is light yellow with hints of orange toning, and partially prooflike with reflective fields. It appears the this example represents the terminal die state. The obverse is similar to that described as state b by J.D. Dannreuther, although with a few additional cracks and other die defects. The reverse is shattered with extensive die cracks.
We noted that this is one of the two most common varieties of the date, yet still with a limited population. The total population of all nine die varieties is under 250 coins, according to Dannreuther. Famous gold collector Harry W. Bass, Jr. owned 18 of those coins, but only one specimen in his collection represented this die combination. Population: 8 in 63, 0 finer (3/07).
From The Temecula Collection, Part Two.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
