1799 $5 Small Stars Reverse MS62 PCGS. B. 1-A, Breen-6
1799<$5> Small Stars Reverse MS62 PCGS. B. 1-A, Breen-6433, Miller-32, Bass-3060, R.5. This is an exceptional and exciting die state with mismatched clash marks featuring reverse clash marks showing the entire date--1798. Coins with clash marks are common, especially among early Mint issues. Those with clash marks from two different die marriages are highly unusual. Examples with clash marks from two different dates of coinage are extremely rare.
The reverse die was first used with a 1798 obverse to coin the B. 6-H die variety. When that die combination was in the press, a die clashing accident happened, and much of the design was struck into the reverse die, including the entire 1798 date. After the obverse die was replaced with a new 1799-dated obverse, this coin was struck with the previous 1798-dated clash marks still clearly present. The entire 1798 date is visible behind STATES, with the 9 and 8 visible at TE. (Hint: remember that the date is a mirror image and is upside down when the reverse is examined.) The reverse die also has a prominent die crack from the border right of the final S, to a cloud, stars 4 and 8, and down to the eagle's head. Either this, or another crack, joins the eagle's wing and right side of T in UNITED. A similar example with mismatched clash marks appeared in the October 1999 sale of the Harry Bass Collection, lot 730.
Compared to half eagles of the previous year, those dated 1799 are highly elusive. Nine different die marriages are known for the year, and the total combined population of all varieties indicates that only about 300 to 400 examples have survived to the present day. The B. 1-A die marriage is the second most common for the date, and yet, only about 50 or 60 examples are known.
Certain characteristics provide easy attribution of this die variety. On the obverse, star 9 is recut, with its top point jo
