1799 $5 Large Stars Reverse AU55 PCGS. Ex: Bass. B. 3-F, Miller-37, R.6. Federal records indicate that only 7,451 Half Eagles emerged from the presses of the Philadelphia Mint in 1799. Not all of these coins may have been dated 1799, and it is likely that some 1798 examples were also included. On the other hand, the delivery for calendar year 1800 may have included some coins dated 1799. Regardless, there can be no doubt that the 1799 is a rare and desirable issue with survivors of all die marriages being more challenging to locate than those of the 1798 Large 8, 13 Stars, 1800, 1802/1, 1803/2, 1804 Small 8, 1804 Small 8 Over Large 8, 1805, 1806 Pointed Top 6, 1806 Round Top 6, and 1807. This impressively pedigreed example is bright with green-gold undertones backlighting yellow-gold highlights. The impression appears to sharpen toward the right borders on both sides, although we do note that the denticles outside AMERICA on the reverse are off the planchet. Prooflike in finish with ample remnants of the original sheen despite light rub and some scuffiness from circulation. A pair of nearly perpendicular pinscratches in the left obverse field, as well as another in the reverse field above the eagle's head, are noted. From the collection of Lance Burney.
