1799<1C> VF30 PCGS. S-189, High R.2. Die State IV. Ex: Norweb. A charming medium-brown example of this desirable date, the rarest within the Large Cent series. The majority of survivors are well worn and have problems, which adds to the importance of the present piece. Liberty's hair has pleasing definition, and although a few tiny marks are detected, none are worthy of discussion, with the possible exception of a moderate abrasion in the field below the L in LIBERTY. The diagnostic die chip above the T in CENT is obvious on this example. A very faint, nearly horizontal die crack from the top of the drapery to the rim past 4 o'clock is mentioned because it is not discussed in Breen's Large Cent Encyclopedia. The present piece was cataloged by Elder as "The finest 1799 I have ever offered for sale."
Ex: Peter Mougey Collection (Thomas Elder, 9/1910), lot 41; Norweb Collection, Part III (Bowers and Merena, 11/88), lot 2782, which realized $6,600.
From The Joshua and Ally Walsh Collection of United States Cents.
