<B>1799 1C VF20 NGC.</B></I> S-189, B-3, R.2. The 1799 is one of the most respected and highly sought out dates in the entire Large cent series. Its rarity was recognized early on. The young Joseph Mickley sought a cent from his birthyear (1799) and when he found the difficulty of locating one in change it piqued his interest in collecting coins. As a rule, most 1799 cents are weakly struck on LIBERTY or the date. This piece, however, is the exception and shows strong definition in both areas. The surfaces are dark, as always. Breen says this darkness is from "Boulton blanks, discolored by salt and bilge water enroute from England." Each side shows numerous abrasions, the most obvious being a shallow, vertical scrape on Liberty's forehead and a small, round planchet void to the left of the first A in AMERICA.
