1799 $10 Small Stars Obverse MS62 NGC. Irregular Date,
1799 $10 Small Stars Obverse MS62 NGC. Irregular Date, Breen-6840, B. 4-E, Taraszka-19, R.3. The 7 in the date is high and leans right, while a mint-made die line is found below the right pendant of the T in UNITED. One of two so-called "Irregular Date" varieties, B. 4-E is the second most common die marriage from this year.
The present example appears to have been struck from an early die state, as there is no evidence of crumbling on the left obverse border and or of the vertical die crack through the E in LIBERTY. The strike is boldly executed, particularly on the reverse, and shows only modest deficiency on the obverse star radials. A delicate coppery-red patina in the exposed fields of the obverse coincides with a number of light abrasions. Needless to say, Mint State survivors of the Capped Bust Right, Heraldic Eagle type are scarce and of extreme importance to collectors, although their census numbers might have a tendency to be misinterpreted since most were certified under a general 1799 category rather than under the separate Small Stars listing.
