1799 $10 Large Stars Obverse MS64 NGC. B. 5-G, Taraszka-22, R.3. The Philadelphia Mint delivered 37,449 Capped Bust Right, Heraldic Eagle Tens between May 14, 1799 and September 4, 1800. Breen (1988) believes that all of these coins were dated 1799, an opinion also advanced by, among other editions, the 2003 Guide Book. Although the 1799 rivals the 1801 for the distinction of the most readily obtainable date of the type, only approximately 2% of the original mintage is believed extant in all grades. The B. 4-E and B. 5-G die marriages seem to be the most common in today's market, and they include a not insignificant number of Mint State coins. Virtually all of the central design elements on both sides of the present example are crisply detailed. Even the peripheries are uncommonly well impressed for the type, but the lower right obverse is softly impressed, as is the corresponding area on the reverse. Some rollermarks (as produced) did not strike out near the upper left reverse border. Both sides are awash in green-gold color that livens to yellow-gold shades as the surfaces dip into the light. Satin in texture with no mentionable abrasions.Ex: Long Beach Signature Sale (Heritage, 6/2002), lot 6766, where it realized $31,050.
