1799 $10 Small Stars Obverse MS62 ANACS. BD-8, R.5. This is the "irregular date" obverse with the digit 1 far below the curl and the last 9 nearly touching the bust, the opposite of normal date placement for this series. This obverse die was combined with two different reverse dies to strike varieties that are cataloged as BD-7 and BD-8 in the new reference by John Dannreuther. While the BD-7 die combination ranks as one of the most common 1799 eagle varieties, this BD-8 marriage is much rarer. Dannreuther estimated that only 45 to 55 pieces are known.
This specimen has a rather extraordinary look. Both sides have exceptional yellow-gold brilliance with a slightly matte appearance. Faint clash marks can be seen on the obverse, along with traces of die polishing lines. The reverse is cracked through AMERICA.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
