1798<S$1> Wide Date. B-20, BB-102, R.4. XF45 NGC. Die chip over left side of 9; Ray of star 12 points to I in PLURIBUS. Reiver die state c. Bowers-Borckardt die state III. An attractive coin that has light silver-gray surfaces with a touch of darker gold nestled into the peripheral lettering and devices. The surfaces show moderate faint hairlines from handling, but no adjustment marks or rim bruises. Fairly well struck for the variety, with no weakness on the shield or stars above.
This die variety is one of only two Bust dollars to develop edge damage which resembles a full cud where portions of the edge of the die have fallen away and thus a raised lump forms on coins struck after the piece breaks away from the die. On this reverse die, the edge of the die breaks below the eagle's tail to the right edge of the second A in AMERICA, but only through the dentils and slightly into the field above, not quite touching the eagle's tail feathers or the top of the A. A die crack is seen through the middle of the dentils to the center of the A back to area where the cud has formed. A heavy die crack splits the I of AMERICA to the ribbon end above, and a thinner die crack branches from the base of the I along the base of the R into the field below M. Clashed from the obverse with a hint of Liberty's bust outlined below the O of OF.
Ex: Julian Leidman (December, 1982). Envelope Included.
