1798<S$1> Wide Date. B-19, BB-106, R.4--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. VF Details. Stars 8 and 13 equally far from Y and bust; Die chips between T and E of STATES. Reiver die state a. Bowers-Borckardt die state III. This is the Reiver plate coin for the obverse and reverse of this variety. Toned with light gold and gray intermixed over traces of luster, and any past evidence of cleaning is minimal. The surfaces show a few trivial circulation marks, but none are distracting, and the rims are clean save for a dimple or two in the dentils. This obverse die cracked very early and none have been reported that show no evidence of the vertical bisecting crack through the E of LIBERTY to the 1 in the date. The left side of the obverse die sank so the details are dull in Liberty's hair, on the right side of the die crack, the hair details are very sharp. On this early die state, the crack barely shows through the 1 in the date, and disappears as it extends up Liberty's shoulder and hair. The obverse die has a lump present below Liberty's bust, very close to the dentils, on the reverse die lumps are noted above the fourth star from the left near the clouds. Identifiable by a two part dull nick on the 9 of the date and Liberty's drapery above the 7, and on the reverse by a small pit on a dentil below the third feather from the left of the tail on the eagle.
Ex: Julian Leidman (April, 1979). Envelope Included.
