1798<S$1> Wide Date. B-10, BB-109, R.4--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. Die chip between bust and star 13; Die chip below end of stem. Reiver die state a. Bowers-Borckardt die state III. A fairly scarce variety that is often misattributed as it shares a very similar reverse with the B-13, BB-108 variety. The surfaces are harshly cleaned and the coin is a mottled gray color. Weakly struck as often seen, with the central details on Liberty's hair quite shallow and some of the stars above the eagle missing as well as most of the dentils. Identifiable by a short scratch in Liberty's hair close to the ribbon knot, and another near the inside point of the first obverse star. Often this variety is found with very weak dentils on the right side of the obverse, as seen here. For the variety, this is still a respectable coin. On this slightly later die state, the obverse die has a thin die crack from below the date at the rim up through several stars on the left.
Ex: John Haugh (9/14/1998). Envelope Included.
