1798 S$1 Small Eagle, 15 Stars Fine 12 PCGS. B-2, BB-81, R.3. Die State II. Reiver State b. Six stars right; leaf tip at center of M. The obverse die has been lapped but there is no evidence of die cracks. Golden-brown surfaces with darker steel color at the borders. Pleasing quality for the grade with smooth obverse and reverse surfaces. This was a transitional year for the silver dollar coinage, with the earliest pieces belonging to the Draped Bust, Small Eagle design type. Two obverse dies were used for these first coins, with 15 stars or 13 stars. This obverse die with 15 stars (arranged with eight stars to the left and seven stars to the right) was only used in 1798, and it was mated with the reverse die that was used for coinage bearing four different dates from 1795 to 1798. It is this later fact that suggests the 15 stars obverse dollars were struck before the 13 stars coins. The obverse die was left over from 1795 or 1796, when 15 stars was the standard. It is probably the case that this die had been completed, but without the final digit in the date. When it was not utilized for coinage in one of the earlier years, it became a stock item in the die shop, and was finally placed into service in 1798, when the final digit of the date was punched into the die.
Ex: North Bay Rare Coin.
From The William Luebke Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
