Unrecorded terminal die state, later than B-1a or Bowers Die State III. Conventional wisdom suggests that examples of this BB-82 die marriage were struck between states IV and V of the 1797 BB-73 silver dollar. Dave Bowers wrote: "Specimens of 1798 BB-82 were struck from a die state intermediate between IV and V. ... Specimens were also struck from Die State V (most usual state for 1798 BB-82)." For die states of this 1798 13 Stars dollar, Bowers noted that Die State II coins were equivalent to a die state intermediate between 1797 Die State IV and V, and that Die State III coins were equivalent to 1797 Die State V examples. In other words, all 1798 13 Stars dollars were struck after 1797 Die State IV and before 1797 Die State V, with the 1797 coins representing a remarriage.
With examination of this coin, we have evidence that at least some 1798 13 Stars dollars were struck after the last of the 1797 coins. Thus, a revised emission sequence includes a further die remarriage: 1797 BB-73 States I-IV; 1798 BB-82 States I-III; 1797 BB-73 State V-VI; 1798 BB-83 Terminal State. The reverse of this dollar is essentially identical to the reverse of the terminal state 1797 BB-73 in this sale, except the crack through the second T of STATES has a slightly more advanced die chip below the base of that letter. This slightly advanced state is just enough to show the order of striking. Another intriguing feature of this coin is the obverse die anomaly at 7 o'clock. Five dentils are extended beyond the outer limits of the remaining dentils. This feature can also be seen on the Bowers-Borckardt plate coin. No immediate explanation comes to mind.
This is a lovely dollar with smooth pewter-gray surfaces and satiny luster. Faint blue and iridescent accents are visible on both sides.
