1798 S$1 Large Eagle XF45 PCGS.
1798 S$1 Large Eagle XF45 PCGS.<p>B-31, BB-115. R.5. Die State IV. This die marriage was unknown when John W. Haseltine offered his reference collection in his Haseltine Type Table Catalog Sale of 1881. In an article published in the John Reich Journal, Volume 11 / Issue 2, January, 1998 titled "Early Silver Die Marriages Discovered Since the 1881 Haseltine Type Table - A Detailed Analysis" this author wrote the following: "It is not known when or by whom the 1798 B-31 was discovered. Bolender had two specimens of this die marriage (lots 84 and 85 in his February, 1952 reference collection sale). Lot 84 was acquired from the Colonel Green Collection. Lot 85 was acquired from the St. Louis Stamp and Coin Company. Based on these two sources it is possible the 1798 B-31 was discovered in the 1940s." This die marriage was called R.7 in the first edition of M. H. Bolender's book The Early United States Silver Dollars from 1794 to 1803. Since then more specimens have been identified, dropping the rarity rating to R.5. This is an above average specimen of this rare die marriage, with nice, clean surfaces, even light toning, and much luster still present. From the Michael Hering Collection.
