1798 S$1 Large Eagle XF45 PCGS. B-27, BB-113, R.2. Lat
1798 S$1 Large Eagle XF45 PCGS. B-27, BB-113, R.2. Late Die State. The 8 in the date is much too high and out of position, tilted too far to the right compared to the other digits. The obverse appears to be from a late die state. The top curl is incomplete, as always seen, and the diagnostic lump shows near star 11. But there is no trace of a crack through the 9 in the date leading upward to the bust, apparently from lapping. A crack does run from beneath the left side of the 9 toward star 1, crossing the two inner points and into the field behind the curls. The reverse is past Bowers-Borckardt Die State III, with a crack through the arrowhead to STA--but another die crack branches off of that crack to the right of F, downward to cloud 8. Another crack, also unrecorded in Bowers-Borckardt, runs from the right side of the tail feathers through ERICA.
This piece has much to offer, besides the unusual and possibly unrecorded late die states on each side. Light olive-gold color fails to dim the luster clinging to each side, and there are no mentionable impairments aside from the light wear. The reverse strike was slightly off-center, so that the reverse dentilation is missing from about 1:30 to 6 o'clock. An interesting piece for the early dollar specialist.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
