1798 S$1 Large Eagle XF40 PCGS. B-7, BB-95, R.5. Die S
1798 S$1 Large Eagle, Knobbed 9 XF40 PCGS. B-7, BB-95, R.5. Die State II. Arc Star Pattern. Digits 1 and 8 touch, or appear to touch, the curl and drapery. The reverse is cracked from the wing to I of AMERICA and the border. Pale gray surfaces with considerable light gold color on each side. A few scattered marks and light scratches can be seen on each side, with faint reverse adjustment marks. This is a scarce variety that is seldom seen in better grades, and it is one of few varieties that was excluded in the wonderful offering of coins from the Jules Reiver collection. Bolender only knew of two examples when his reference was published in 1950. Today, there may be as many as 50 or 60 known examples of this die combination, but the surviving population is certainly less than the 100 to 150 survivors suggested by Dave Bowers in his Silver Dollar Encyclopedia. An attempt to pinpoint the number of surviving examples of certain varieties, especially those in the middle range of rarity, is extraordinarily difficult, or more likely impossible. It is easy to keep track of known survivors of extremely rare varieties, and it is unimportant to estimate the number known of common varieties, but it is both important and impossible to record the number known for the scarce varieties.
Ex: Jim Matthews; Harry Laibstain (12/2004).
From The William Luebke Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
