<B>1798 S$1 Large Eagle, Knobbed 9 XF40 PCGS.</B></I> B-3, BB-94, R.5. Die State III. Arc Star Pattern. Digits 1 and 8 are clearly separated from the curl and bust. The obverse has a crack from the rim between stars 2 and 3. This coin should see strong demand from die variety specialists as most consider it to be an R.5 die marriage. It is also an example of the short-lived Knob 9 obverse die, which is listed in the <I>Guide Book.</B></I> This obverse die was used twice previously to strike 1798 B-4, BB-92 and 1798 B-5, BB-93. The reverse die would later be used to strike two additional varieties, 1798 B-7, BB-95 and 1798 B-20, BB-102. Most of the surviving examples of this variety are found in grades lower than the XF40 example offered here.<BR> This coin displays a few noticeable adjustment marks at the center and lower right portion of the reverse. The surfaces show an abundant amount of deep charcoal-brown toning with splashes of steel color on each side. A nicely defined and well centered impression.<BR> Attribution of the 1798 Heraldic Eagle dollars is made easier by understanding and recognizing the two major obverse types as well as the two reverse types. The obverse types are simply the Pointed 9 and Knobbed 9 types, and recognition is straightforward. The reverse types are the Line Star Pattern with two linear groups of three stars to the left and right in the top row, and the Arc Star Pattern with a smoothly curved arc of six stars in the top row.
