<B>1798 S$1 Large Eagle, Wide Date XF40 ICG.</B></I> B-10, BB-109, R.5. Die State III. Pointed 9, Arc Star Pattern. Die chip between drapery and star 13; reverse star 12 points to center of B in PLURIBIUS. The obverse die chip is present on all known examples and is an instant identifier for this obverse die. Both sides have mottled rose, gold, and pale blue toning with splashes of peripheral iridescence. Minute surface roughness is evident across both sides. This variety is almost always found with weak central details that should not be considered for grade. A more important consideration is the evidence of mint luster that is still visible, especially on the reverse. This is an extremely difficult variety to locate, especially in higher grades. Over the years, various estimates of the number known have been given, ranging from less than 30 pieces to nearly 200 coins.
