1798 S$1 Large Eagle, Wide Date VF20 ANACS. B-22, BB-104, R.4. Die State I. Reiver Die State a. Pointed 9, Arc Star Pattern. Date is high with 8 touching drapery; star 3 distant from cloud. Pewter-gray and deep steel toning in the fields surround lighter gray devices. A few short scratches along Liberty's hairline behind the eye give the appearance of an attempt at reengraving, although we believe that they are merely random surface marks. The surfaces are lightly abraded with evidence of an old cleaning beneath the toning. This early die state example has no trace of the crack that is usually seen through the E of STATES. Refer to the plate of lot 23530 in the Jules Reiver catalog for an example of the late die state with a bold crack along the right side of this letter.
The reverse die is shared between B-18 and B-22. Bolender claimed that all examples of B-18 had the heavy die crack through the E of STATES. However, it may be the case that Bolender was confused regarding this reverse die. Today, at least two examples of the B-18 rarity are known without the reverse crack, and possibly all five known examples of B-18 exist without that die crack. The combination of known examples of B-18 without the crack, and Bolender's comment that all examples have the crack, led Dave Bowers to the logical conclusion that every BB-22 was produced between an interrupted B-18 die marriage.
Ex: Lano Balulescu (6/2001).
From The William Luebke Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
