1798 S$1 Large Eagle, Wide Date, High 8 VF25 NGC. B-23
1798 S$1 Large Eagle, Wide Date, High 8 VF25 NGC. B-23, BB-105, R.3. Die State III. Reiver Die State b. Pointed 9, Arc Star Pattern. Top of 8 joins bust, corrugated die chip between TE of STATES. This die combination is one of the most easily located of all 1798 Heraldic Eagle varieties. It is a transitional variety with the obverse used for B-22 before its use here, and the reverse used on this variety first and later used for B-19, thus establishing the emission sequence for these three varieties. For any series of coins, the emission sequence attempts to state order in which these coins were originally minted. Many numismatists have attempted to make such a determination for most series of early U.S. coins from half cents to eagles. For early dollars, the Bowers-Borckardt numbering system follows a proposed emission sequence for these coins. One possibility that has not been discussed before (to the best of our knowledge) is multiple presses simultaneously striking the same denomination. What if this occurred?
Vivid olive and golden-brown toning surrounds lighter silver color on the central obverse motif. The reverse is similar, although the eagle is toned much like the balance of this piece. Traces of luster remain visible, especially on the reverse.
Ex: Stack's (5/2001).
From The William Luebke Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
