The heavy obverse die crack and a raised die mark in the obverse field to the left of star 12 helps quickly identify this variety. The reverse can be easily attributed by noting the star that touches the eagle's lower beak. This obverse die was used to strike seven different die varieties of 1798 dollars. This is the seventh and final use of the obverse die, thus some weakness of detail is reflected in the striking due to die wear. This is an above average example of the variety, with original toning and nice surfaces and eye appeal for the grade. In the June 2005 census of early dollars published in the John Reich Journal there were nine examples of this die marriage. The top collection at the time only had a specimen called VF20, after over 20 years of searching. The average grade was "VF32" and the top specimen was a solid XF45 example. There is some darker toning to the left of stars 3, 4, and 6 and a light streak passes through the eagle's left (facing) wing and a couple of stars on the reverse. An important variety for the early dollar collector.
