<B>1798 S$1 Large Eagle, Wide Date VF30 NGC.</B></I> B-12, BB-120, R.4. Die State IV. Reiver State b (14). Pointed 9, Line Star Pattern. Digit 8 well below drapery, closer to the border, and this is diagnostic for the 1798 silver dollars of this group. The obverse die is shattered with several cracks, while the reverse shows die failure among the stars to the upper right. Although it is not the same coin, this example appears to be in the same die state as lot 1233 in the Gilhousen Collection, described by Dave Bowers as the terminal die state for the variety. Every one of the 14 die cracks described by Jules Reiver in his update of the Bolender reference is present on this specimen. Considerable lilac-gray color is evident in the fields with light silver-gray on the devices. Pleasing surfaces with the usual minor abrasions scattered about each side. Although this is not a rare variety, it remains scarce and is solidly in the R.4 range.
