1798 S$1 Large Eagle VF30 ANACS. B-8a, BB-125, R.2. Di
1798 S$1 Large Eagle, Four Berries VF30 ANACS. B-8a, BB-125, R.2. Die State IV. Reiver Die State c. Pointed 9, Arc Star Pattern. Only four berries. This is the only variety of 1798 with a four-berry reverse die, the branch missing the top inside berry. Deeply toned with gray and steel color blended together on each side with evidence of lighter silver color on the devices. Stars 5 and 7 on the obverse are nearly invisible, and parts of UNITED are extremely weak. This example is slightly later than the "Eleven Obverse Stars" example in the Reiver Collection. Several die states are known with varying numbers of stars missing on the obverse, and parts or all of UNITED missing on the reverse. An article in the May 1966 issue of The Numismatist told of a new variety of 1798 dollar with only 12 stars. Further investigation revealed an intermediate die state of this variety, similar to the example offered here. The reverse of this example has several die cracks; the most easily seen splits the C in AMERICA and continues to the branch and right side of the shield. This variety is a favorite with our consignor and was also a favorite of Jules Reiver, who obtained five different die states ranging from 13 stars to one with just eight stars.
Ex: Stack's (1/2002).
From The William Luebke Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
