1798 S$1 Large Eagle VF20 PCGS. B-26, BB-114, R.5. Die
1798 S$1 Large Eagle, Close Date VF20 PCGS. B-26, BB-114, R.5. Die State V. Pointed 9, Line Star Pattern. Digit 8 high and leans right. Star 12 joins upper beak. A tiny die flaw is visible at the inside point of star 12 on the obverse. This obverse die was used for seven different 1798 silver dollar varieties, four with the Arc Star Pattern and three more with the Line Star Pattern. In practice, it is usually recognized by the branch die cracks through and below the date. Both sides have mottled iridescence over light gray surfaces that have a slightly polished appearance. A few small marks are located on Liberty's neck with other typical abrasions, including some faint scratches among the reverse stars, now nearly invisible. Actually a later die state than BB-114 State V with additional cracks at E of STATES, one through the outer left serifs and another from the upper right of the same letter to cloud 5 below the left serif of adjacent S. These cracks are visible in the BB plate but not described. They are described in Jules Reiver's update of the Bolender reference. This is a rare variety, and it is much more difficult to locate than commonly believed. Few higher grade pieces exist. In his Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, Dave Bowers mentioned that he was unaware of any AU or Mint State examples.
Ex: Clark Smith (eBay, 1/2003).
From The William Luebke Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
