<B>1798 S$1 Large Eagle, Wide Date XF40 PCGS.</B></I> B-16, BB-110, Low R.6. This is a rare die variety, and one that seldom crosses the auction block. In fact, in 1950 Bolender wrote, "The die broke early and so badly that very few pieces were struck, possibly not over two, as no others are known to the author." It is easily distinguished by the heavy die break from the top of the numerals of the date, through the lower curl in Liberty's hair, to the rim area under star 1. This example is actually an earlier die state with the crack not fully developed, and only intermittently reaching the border. Rare early dollars, such as this, are seeing strong demand from an ever-growing number of collectors. The surfaces on this specimen are toned natural-appearing medium gray-brown with lighter gray toning at selected protected areas. A nice example with only the usual light surface marks, and worth a close examination.
