1798 S$1 Large Eagle, Knobbed 9 Fine 12 NGC. B-5, BB-93, High R.6. Die State III. Line Star Pattern. Four vertical shield lines, and the only variety with this feature among the silver dollars of this subtype. This is the usual later die state with a bisecting reverse die crack that is seen on nearly every known example. The pattern of toning and wear serves to emphasize the die crack, creating a stunning visual effect. Pleasing gray-brown surfaces with lighter silver-gray color on the devices. Most of the few known examples have problems from minor to major, but this example is a highly desirable and essentially problem-free specimen. A tiny rim bruise is visible on the obverse at 12 o'clock. In his Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, Dave Bowers suggested a surviving population of 30 to 50 examples. However, the true population is probably much smaller, perhaps just over a dozen examples in all grades. In 1950, Bolender wrote that he had seen just one example of this variety, while the 1975 ANA sale included three different specimens. Although Jules Reiver owned an example, it was sold privately before the sale of his collection, thus did not appear in our January 2006 auction. Specialists in the early dollar series will recognize the high level of importance that is presented here.
Ex: Craig Eberhart (1/2006).
From The William Luebke Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
