<B>1798 S$1 Large Eagle, Close Date XF45 PCGS.</B></I> B-27, BB-113, R.2. Die State II. Reiver Die State b. Pointed 9, Arc Star Pattern. Digit 8 high and leans right; star 12 distant from beak. This is the obverse die that usually has a prominent crack through the digit 9 with branches in both directions below the date. On this example, the vertical crack through the 9 is extremely faint, and the branch cracks have not formed. The tiny die chip inside star 12 is clearly visible. This variety represents the first use of the obverse die and the final use of the reverse die. This is one of the most plentiful of all 1798 die marriages, an ideal choice for date and type collectors, especially since a number of higher grade pieces are known. Delightful pewter-gray surfaces on both sides with traces of luster still visible around the devices. The usual tiny surface marks are evident on the obverse and reverse.
