1798<S$1> Close Date. B-29, BB-119, R.4. Fine 15 NGC. Digit 8 out of position, high and leaning slightly right; Line star pattern, star touches lower beak. Reiver die state a. Bowers-Borckardt die state I. Dark gray fields with lighter devices on both the obverse and reverse, with a dark streak through the left wing of the eagle. This variety is usually weak at the centers, and the die cracks through the 9 of the date are fairly advanced as this is the last known use of this obverse die and its seventh reverse die pairing.
The obverse die was literally worn out when this coin was struck. This die had developed faint die cracks through the date on its first marriage to coin the B-27, BB-113 variety, and remarkably continued in use with seven reverse dies, all of the reverses shattered and were apparently discarded. Somehow this obverse die stayed relatively stable through all these marriages. This is of particular interest given the fact that the obverse had developed its own die cracks so early in its life. Somehow it held together and the cracks strengthened bit by bit, while new reverse die after new reverse die was married to it, the reverses then cracked, shattered and were replaced while the obverse continued on. One of the more difficult varieties to find in high grade and generally not appreciated by variety collectors for the scarcity of this marriage.
Ex: Van Horn (February, 1972). Envelope Included.
