1798<S$1> Close Date. B-28, BB-118, R.3--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. VF Details. Digit 8 out of position, high and leaning slightly right; Point of leaf below right half of C. Reiver die state c. Bowers-Borckardt die state IV. Medium gray in color and fairly attractive for the grade. There are some minor surface hairlines and a few light scratches on the upper obverse. On the reverse the central star is very weak, as seen on the earliest die state. The cracks have advanced rapidly from the previous coin, with the die crack through the arrow feathers extending into the shield, and this crack is joined by a similar die crack from the rim up through the left side of the left claw to the shield, and the small section of the die between these two cracks has started to sink, which appears similar to a candle flame. Another thin die crack extends from the rim through the U of UNITED and just touches the lower left foot of the N, the two longer arrow heads close to the N, up through the eagle's wing, through the P of PLURIBUS and ends as it crosses the two upper points of the first reverse star under the cloud. Identifiable by a tiny rim tick just below the left upper tip of the wing
Ex: Werl (March, 1984). Envelope Included.
